EFT for Weight Loss
EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques. What if you could reduce, or eliminate, negative emotions and stress with the touch of your fingertips? I know. That sounds a bit odd and just too good to be true. But it is true. . . . and it is odd! So be it. The EFT process of tapping on acupressure points while tuning into a problem has a proven and remarkable effect.

EFT (often called tapping) works on the Autonomic Nervous System. Simply put, EFT tempers the stress response and invokes the relaxation response. Approaching weight loss from strictly a physical body, i.e. calories in/calories out approach doesn’t work for most people, or for any length of time, because emotions are likely involved. So if emotions got you into trouble, we need to involve emotions to get you out of trouble.

With EFT weight loss coaching we get to the heart of the matter. Emotions likely play a part on why and how you eat. Your stressors and beliefs about how you see yourself, what you think you deserve or don’t deserve, or what is possible, can all be changed when you work with an EFT weight loss coach. The bonus? EFT tapping is also a self-help tool you will learn to use independently.

What is EFT?

EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques – often referred to as ‘tapping’ because you tap on yourself.

It is a leading edge, stress-reduction technique that works quickly to reduce or eliminate the stress caused by negative emotions. It is also a self-help tool, so easy to learn even a child can do it.

Throughout our lives we store an ocean of memories and experiences in our minds and bodies, not all of them are conscious or joyful. With EFT we can remove the sting, or the stress, of the memories and experiences from the past, and also the present, that affect us.Be it repeated put-downs from a family member, or that fight with your boss that just happened, by applying EFT you can be free of that experience. It becomes just a story, without any attachment, negativity or stress – emotional freedom! And with emotional freedom those putdowns no longer limit you and the disagreement can be remedied.

The basis of EFT is that all problems, whether emotional, physical or performance-based, are the result of imbalances, or disruptions, in the body’s energy system. These imbalances can have profound, negative effects on our wellbeing.

EFT works to dissolve beliefs and experiences that fuel stress, anxiety, disease and/or dysfunction. If you find yourself stuck, there is likely something working beneath the surface of your awareness that is blocking you. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be stuck.

It’s my job as coach/practitioner to help you identify the problem and clear the way forward.

Why would I use EFT?

Why wouldn’t you? EFT is able to affect a wide range of problems, including weight gain. The reason is because it reduces stress, and stress, in one form or another, is a component of many problems.

Here’s why you might want to try EFT.

  • It works fast.
  • It often works when nothing else does.
  • It is gentle.
  • It requires no drugs, needles or other equipment.
  • It is safe and easy to use.
  • You can do it with a practitioner via phone or Skype.
  • You can do it on yourself.
  • Results last.

Does this sound too good to be true? It’s not. It’s true and available to all.

An estimated six million people worldwide use EFT. It is being taught and practiced in schools, prisons, hospitals, and on sports fields. Major projects are underway with war veterans with PTSD, orphans in Rwanda, and families of victims of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut.

EFT allows you to improve all aspects of your life and wellbeing. At some level, we understand that stress shows up in our bodies. Maybe our blood pressure goes up, we’re depressed, we get sick, we gain weight, we experience insomnia, and/or disease. By addressing the stress of negative emotions relief is possible. As Gary Craig, EFT founder, says, “try it on everything.”

How does EFT work?

To correct energy imbalances, difficult emotions or barriers to success in any aspect of life, we integrate western psychology and eastern medicine.

A set of techniques developed in the mid 90s by Stanford engineer, Gary Craig, involves identifying a specific problem. As we tune into the problem we tap on a set of acupressure points with the fingertips and make statements that reflect the problem.

The process is very simple, and repeatable. See how do I do it.

Depending on the nature and severity of the problem, a practitioner will utilize different techniques to bring peace to the client in the gentlest way possible. You don’t have to relive the experience to relieve it.

It should be noted that EFT does not replace doctors, therapists, medications, or any other treatment protocols.

The EFT process often leads to a greater sense of wellbeing because when energies flow through the body, the body takes care of itself. Studies show that cortisol, our body’s primary stress hormone, is reduced, when doing EFT. The result is that we see things differently. We can operate from a clean slate, from choice, versus reacting to old wounds buried in our subconscious.

In physical terms, EFT impacts the autonomic nervous system. A negative thought, experience or memory will trigger a conditioned stress response, i.e. fight-or-flight, that starts in your brain, invoking the sympathetic nervous system. With EFT, you’re re-conditioning the brain to produce a relaxation response, invoking the parasympathetic nervous system. The tapping actually sends a calming signal to the amygdala in the limbic part of your brain. The conditioned association of the stressor is broken, and when EFT is done thoroughly, stays broken. The problem evaporates. Balance and harmony are restored. And you are no longer triggered by the negative emotion or event.

    How do you do EFT?

  1. Identify The Issue. Notice something that is bothering you. It might be something that happened, or something you’re stressed about. a) What is the emotion you’re experiencing? b) Notice where you feel the emotion, or the stressor, in your body.
  2. Measure the intensity. Measure the intensity of the problem as it is in the present moment by using a basic scale of 0 – 10, i.e. 0 – no discomfort, to 10 – maximum discomfort. We also test as we go. This helps us to determine if we’re on the right course and are truly feeling better.

  1. The Setup. State the problem in this format. Say, “Even though (state the problem specifically), I deeply and completely accept myself,” while tapping on the karate chop point on the hand, (see illustration) with the fingertips of the other hand. Repeat the statement three times.
    Example Setup Statements
    Even though I have this thumping headache, I deeply and completely accept myself.
    Even though I’m so angry at Jack for humiliating me publicly, I deeply and completely accept myself.
    Even though I really want to eat these chips, I deeply and completely accept myself.
    The Setup Statement must acknowledge the problem (yes, it’s negative) and state acceptance of the problem. The self-acceptance part of the statement is integral. Say it even if you don’t believe it at first. Now that you’ve set up your energy system, you’re ready for the next part of EFT’s Basic Recipe, the Sequence.
  2. The Sequence Tap on the meridian points below while saying a reminder phrase. Tap five or six times, with two or three fingertips, starting with the top of the head. (Some people start with the eyebrow point and finish with the head. It doesn’t really matter.)Reminder Phrases are the things you say while tapping on the points. You simply state a brief phrase that reminds you of the problem, tuning into it. E.g. this headache, this headache, this headache…

    The finger points can serve as a shortcut when you want to be discreet, or may be used as an add-on to the Basic Recipe. They are located on the side of the fingers, beside the nail. When tapping on the left hand, use the right side of fingers when hand is pointing downward and vice versa.

  3. Measure Intensity Again. After one or two rounds through the points you measure again, and repeat the procedure, until such time the distress score diminishes significantly or disappears altogether. When possible, it’s best to test in the real world also. (i.e. expose yourself to potato chips)

Even though you may be hearing about EFT for the first time, it was developed in 1995 by Gary Craig, and has since spread around the world. EFT is here to stay – because it works. Every practitioner has a wealth of anecdotal evidence. But for those who need or want scientific evidence, more than 60 investigators in 10 plus countries have researched EFT. Results have been published in more than 20 different peer-reviewed journals.

About Me

Following a career in graphic design I spent two years in coach training, graduating in 2001.

A specialty in wellness came easily to me because I’ve always cared about living a healthy life. Then I became even more specialized, supporting clients to lose weight. I chose this weight loss coaching specialty believing that because I was a thin and active, health conscious individual I could support people who struggled with the things I did easily.

I was quite naïve.

I was a product of the culture we live in, where it is believed that if we just eat less and move more we will lose weight. Not necessarily so! If it were that simple we wouldn’t have an obesity epidemic.

Hundreds of clients and plenty of research have taught me that weight management is quite complex. Excess weight is impacted by a variety of factors, including: stress, sleep, hormones, emotions, genes, drugs, self-image… and not limited to calories in / calories out. Truthfully, my approach has always been comprehensive and holistic and not focused on calories. (See my original site at www.weightandwellnesscoach.ca for plenty of resources.)

Having experimented with Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT, often called tapping) for many years, I pursued training, was mentored and certified 2/16.

EFT is an excellent coaching tool that allows me to explore the stress of negative emotions with clients in order to reduce or eliminate them. No matter how devoted you are to the proper diet and lifestyle, you’re unlikely to achieve your ideal weight if emotional barriers exist. And we all have some kind of emotional barriers.

Proper training, experience, intuition and coaching skills are extremely beneficial in using EFT, and can make significant differences in the level of results.

My Approach

Excess weight is often a symptom of a life out of balance. My approach is to address the imbalance, the stress and/or lack of joy, versus the calories. Of course calories play a role, but let’s get to the source of your weight challenges. For example, what makes you eat? Let’s do something about that.

My intent is to support you to identify core issues, limiting beliefs and negative emotions you hold about your self and your body and clear them with EFT. You will change, and your relationship to food and your body will change.

As an EFT weight loss coach, I support people who want to work towards a healthier weight and a more balanced, fulfilling life.
